Newspapers! Stop publishing free content on the web!
In an amusingly ironic opinion piece, published by a newspaper, free-to-view on the internet, Peter Scheer wants newspapers to stop publishing valuable editorial content free on the internet, as least for a few hours.
He argues that you need to be as big as Google or Yahoo to be able to sell enough ads to sustain giving everything away. If that’s true 95% of commercial content publishers we may as well all give up and go home! And it’s very different from the strategy of media groups such as The Guardian.
I think two things need to continue: advertising spend needs to continue to transfer online. The second is that content creators need to re-think their workflow and bring down their overheads.
